Wisdom, Justice, Fortitude and Temprance

“You wrote to me once of the four true virtues: Wisdom, Justice, Fortitude and Temprance. As I read them, I knew I had none of them. But I have other virtues.” is the line that Commodus says to his father, Marcus Aurelius in Ridley Scott’s Gladiator. The film is so beautifully written, acted, filmed and produced, that I think of it often.

When John Piper spoke this Sunday spoke about The Prodigal Son, I pictured Commodus strangling his father. It’s so sad, but to think of how “My child” is such a loving term, not sarcastic, but full of a lifetime of love, I think of the humble Ceasar bowing before his son in this movie.
