Inspiring TED Talks about Working Happily and Productively

I enjoyed watching these two inspiring TED Talks about working happily and productively. Here are the links for your reference. Oftentimes, watching videos like this a second or third time will really help reinforce what you saw the first time, and you’ll catch things you didn’t notice the first time around. Below are my notes, some takeaways from the talks.

Shawn Achor – The Happy Secret to Better Work

  • The Unicorn Story – Positive Psychology
    • Escaping the Cult of the Average – the outlier should be reached toward, the goal should not be the average
    • “Normal” is average – let’s move the entire average up
  • Our external world only predicts 10% of long term happiness
  • 90% of happiness is determined by the way your brain processes the world
  • 75% of Job Successes are determined by your Optimism, your Social Support and your ability to see stress as a challenge instead of as a threat

    • How to get to Health: Reverse the formula for happiness and success – from If I work hard, I’ll be more successful. If I’m more successful, then I’ll be happier. Scientifically broken and backwards for two reasons:
      • 1. Every time your brain has a success, you just changed the way success looks and what the goalpost of success is (got good grades, now have to get better grades)
      • 2. If happiness is on the opposite side of success, your brain never gets there
    • Change the way your brain processes success to become positive in the present, and our brains work more successfully we’re able to work harder, faster and more intelligently
      • If you can raise somebody’s positivity level in the present, then their brain experiences a Happiness Advantage
    • Happy Brains are more Productive – Every single business outcome is improved

  • How do you train your brain to become more positive?
      • 2 minutes a day, 21 days in a row & your brain will scan the world for the positive first

Dan Ariely – What Makes Us Feel Good About our Work

    • Bionicle Experiment:
      • Breaking them in front of people’s eyes took away any joy they would/could have gotten from building/producing
      • People need to be acknowledged/recognized
    • Software Company Example – Things to avoid the EEs w/cancelled project getting depressed
      • Allow them to present to the company what they’d done/learned
      • Allow them to talk with other depts. At the company to see if their work could be helpful there
      • Ask them to build a prototype to see it work
    • Getting people to work harder gets them to love what they’re doing to a higher degree
    • The builder/producer loves the product well above evaluators/external people
        • In a knowledge economy, meaning is more important than efficiency
        • Production increases when people do one step out of many, but people care more about a product when they do all the steps to produce it
